5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Starting in HR

A few honest lessons from my first years in HR — the stuff nobody tells you until you're in the middle of it.

Starting out in HR, I thought the job was mostly about processes — offer letters, onboarding checklists, policy documents. Turns out, most of the real work happens in the grey areas nobody trains you for.

1. People skills matter more than paperwork

You can know every labor law by heart, but if you can't have an honest conversation with someone who's frustrated, none of it helps.

2. Recruiting is 80% follow-up

Sourcing candidates is the easy part. Keeping them engaged, replying on time, and not letting good candidates go cold — that's where most hiring actually breaks down.

3. Every "small" HR decision has a ripple effect

A delayed response, a missed follow-up, a poorly worded email — these things shape how people feel about the company long before they join.

4. Data helps, but instinct still matters

Numbers tell you what's happening. They rarely tell you why. Talking to people directly still beats any dashboard.

5. The best HR work is invisible

When things run smoothly, nobody notices HR. That's usually a sign it's working.

These lessons are part of why I started building HRexora — trying to fix some of the friction I kept running into firsthand.
