After screening hundreds of profiles across marketing, growth, and content roles, I keep seeing the same avoidable mistakes ones that get strong candidates filtered out before a recruiter even reads their full profile. Here are the five that come up most often.

1. Generic headlines that say nothing

"Marketing Professional" or "Seeking Opportunities" tells a recruiter nothing about what you actually do. Your headline is prime real estate use it to state your specialization and level clearly. "Performance Marketing Executive | Meta & Google Ads | 3+ Years" gets noticed. "Marketing Professional" gets scrolled past.

2. Resume and profile don't match

Recruiters often check both your resume and your LinkedIn/Naukri profile before shortlisting. When job titles, dates, or responsibilities don't line up between the two, it raises a quiet red flag even if the mismatch was accidental. Keep both updated in parallel, especially after a role change.

3. No portfolio or work samples linked

For content, design, video, or marketing roles especially a bullet point saying "Managed social media campaigns" tells me nothing. A link to the actual campaign, a Google Drive folder with writing samples, or a portfolio site does the convincing for you. Candidates who include this consistently move faster through screening.

4. Ignoring the "About" section

Most profiles either leave this blank or copy-paste their resume summary word-for-word. This section is where you can actually sound like a person what you're good at, what kind of work excites you, what you're looking for next. Recruiters read this before deciding whether to even open your resume.

5. Applying without tailoring

Sending the same generic application to every listing is the single biggest reason strong candidates get missed. Even small adjustments mentioning the specific role, referencing something from the job description, correcting your headline to match the role you're applying for signal genuine interest over mass-applying.

The bottom line

Recruiters aren't looking for perfection we're looking for clarity. A profile that clearly shows what you do, backed by real examples, will always outperform one that's just technically complete.
